I would like to buy a book for an 11yr old boy as a Yr 6 leavers present. He has had a difficult time of it having been in care, adopted, rejected again and is now being fostered by a neighbour. He's really coming on well but I wondered if any MNs have suggestions for books about people triumphing despite the obstacles?

The Silver Sword- Ian Serallier or I am David. Both about children managing independently in WW2

What a lovely idea. Can only think of ones more suited to girls (A Little Princess or Heidi) but will keep trying. Apart from Lord of the Rings ...

What a lovely thought. The only book I can think of is Danny Champion of the World, although this may be a little young for him. Depends on the child though as I read it at about that age.
