Comedy books for 8 year olds

can anyone recommend other authors in the jeremy strong, david walliams vein? My 8yr old DD has read all the JS books and we need to find other comedy authors. She also likes jaqueline wilson, but has read all the ones for her age. Won't read enid blyton. So many books for 8-10 seem to be adventure type stories which she just won't read at all.

All ideas gratefully received!

MNHQ Update
This is an old thread, but if you've landed here while on the hunt for similar recommendations, our guide to the best books for eight-year-olds has been recently updated. It includes a wide range of options, from best-sellers to lesser known gems, and has been complied using recommendations from Mumsnet users. We hope it’s helpful! Flowers

Has she read
Captain Underpants
Professor Branestawm
The Wombles (full length books rather than the little short ones)
Paddington

Also anything else by Norman Hunter (esp the Incrediblania stories) and anything else by Michael Bond (Olga da Polga, Here comes Thursday etc).

And also the Uncle books by JP Martin

Also, has she read the Worst Witch books (maybe a bit young though).

Most of these apart from Cpt Underpants you'd need to get 2nd hand, as you say adventure/fantasy is more popular these days for that age group

Thanks for the ideas - don't think we have tried any of those except worst witch which she liked for a while but no more.

If she hasn't read them I would definitely try Captain Underpants, they're very popular round here.

How about Mr Gum series, Phantom tollbooth.

In our house we laughed a lot at 'Woof' by Allen Ahlberg. In fact we had the story tape which was done brilliantly! Andy Griffiths has written lots of funny books, all titles beginning with the word 'Just...'. There's 'Just Annoying', 'Just Kidding', 'Just Stupid', etc. If you haven't come across the 'Diary of a Wimpy Kid' books, there are lots to choose from. They are by an author called Jeff Kinney.

Love love love Captain Underpants. I've been known to read them on my own Blush

Mrs Pepperpot is good too.

The Mr Gum series by Andy Stanton - brilliantly funny.

DaisyheadMayzie · 25/02/2012 19:29

MY 8yo DS loves the David Walliams books and the Wimpy Kid series. I assume she's read Roald Dahl?

DaisyheadMayzie · 25/02/2012 19:31

sorry, just reread your thread and you mentionned David Walliams already!

The Zeus books by John Dougherty are very funny - about a boy who conjures up a Greek god who wreaks havoc around the place.

I used to cry with laughter reading Mr. Gum. I often couldn't get to the end of a page.

"A rockery in the shape of wrestling" Grin

Milliganesque and wonderfully inventive.

Well obviously I've got to suggest The Bromeliad Trilogy (Truckers, Diggers and whatever the other one is called...)
