Hi, my 2 year old dd has grown out of board books and seems to be ready for something with a bit more text in than Maisy books, all we have so far is Laura's Star and a few Blue kangaroo books... I'm looking for inspiration! What do you love to read to your little ones????

Most Julia Donaldson books go down pretty well here. The Gruffalo was DD1's favourite when she was about 2, she also loves The Snail and the Whale.

sleeplessinderbyshire · 14/01/2012 21:11

anything by Julia Donaldson but especially what the ladybird heard and the gruffalo. The tiger who came for tea. Any of the Mog books. The Rainbow Fish. The lion in the meadow

ISpyPlumPie · 14/01/2012 21:12

DS likes Julia Donaldson (esp Gruffalo, Squash and a Squeeze and Room on the Broom). He also likes Harry and the Bucketful of Dinosaurs (the original books, not the rubbishy TV tie-in ones) and Pumpkin Soup is another recent favorite. I know they're pretty unpopular on here but he's also very keen on the Mr Men. They were the first books he really laughed at and he's always repeating parts of them. HTH.

Sirzy · 14/01/2012 21:12

Each peach pear plum

The large family

Anything by Julia Donalsdon - a squash and a sqeeze is a favourite

KenDoddsDadsDog · 14/01/2012 21:15

The cat in the hat

DamselInDisarray · 14/01/2012 21:20

DS2 (2) loves books. He loves:

Julia Donaldson (in general)
Pumpkin Soup (which is lovely)
Harry and the Dinosaurs
Dr Seuss
The aliens love underpants books (the rhymes are pretty dire though)
The pirate cruncher (he loves, loves, loves this; it's quite dark though)
Good little wolf (also quite dark)
David Melling books (he seems to like them all)
We're going on a bear hunt
Giles Andreae books

And loads more.

mistressploppy · 14/01/2012 21:22

Topsy and Tim books are a major fave with our DS

wonkylegs · 14/01/2012 21:34

Any Hairy maclary story

Fidgety fish & friends

Blatherskite · 14/01/2012 21:37

DD (just 2) is currently obsessed with "Penguin" by Polly Dunbar, "What the Ladybird Heard" by Julia Donalson and tonight she really enjoyed "Peace at Last" by Jill Murphy.

Oh and the Curious George books which she got for Christmas.

BikeRunSki · 14/01/2012 21:38

I dont have a two year old, but have been around a fair few little ones, and i'd say "The Queen's KNickers" always well received by both boys and girls; anything by SHirley Hughes or Allen Alberg. What about Funny Bones (in a dark, dark house, on a dark, dark hill etc)?

Can you tell I love the classics!

jennifersofia · 14/01/2012 21:45

Jez Alborough books are good, such as 'Hug' and 'Where's my Teddy?'

lolalotta · 15/01/2012 07:14

What a lot of replies, THANK YOU do much everyone for taking the time to reply, I'm hoping to get an hour to myself in Smiths/ Waterstones so I can check some of these suggestions out and then see what I can get on Amazon. Thank you ladies! Grin

Why don't you head to the library first then you can see what he goes for before you buy. Our library has a great kids area.

At 2 DD1 like a lot of the books mentioned above although she was a later comer to The Gruffalo etc.

Giraffes can't dance is brilliant
Tiger who came to tea
Owl babies
Kipper (any) (the DVD is great too)
Fergus (the sea dog one is the best in our opinion)
Elmer

sleeplessinderbyshire · 15/01/2012 09:09

I forgot about Kipper and Owl bbies. DD also loves a book called Landy about an old abandoned landrover on a farm. We go through phases of using the library loads - usually just before birthday/christmas when we are bored of the books we have at home. My absolute favourite is This is the Bear by Sarah Hayes

SkiBumMum · 15/01/2012 20:21

Also, have you tried the orchard farm series by usborne. My godson adores them.

BlueChampagne · 24/01/2012 14:16

Tinga Tinga tales popular along with Julia Donaldson, Mr Men and The Tiger that came to Tea.

ViolaCrayola · 24/01/2012 14:20

My 2 year old's faves:

Hungry Caterpillar
Goodnight Moon
Tiger who cam to tea
Mog the cat books
Meg and Mog
Harry the dirty dog
Little Red Train books - these are amazing and WAY better than Thomas the Tank!
Peepo
Bob the Man on the Moon

He also really loves big books of nursery rhymes with pictures in.

Enjoy! :)

ilovedjasondonovan · 24/01/2012 14:40

Pants - every night for 3 months it was bloody Pants. Still, its quite funny.

Crabbylucy · 24/01/2012 19:58

The Kipper books are lovely, and my son loved the Patch books (he still has them on his shelf, he is 11)

TheScottishPlayer · 24/01/2012 20:03

Most of the ones mentioned already and the Oliver Jeffers ones. Lovely stories.

TunipTheVegemal · 24/01/2012 20:05

A Squash and a Squeeze
The Gruffalo
Peepo
Each Peach Pear Plum (he has a bit of a crush on Bo Peep.)

BlueEyeshadow · 28/01/2012 22:12

DS2 is currently obsessed with Alfie (specifically Alfie Gets in First and Alfie's Feet). He also loves Maisy and anything by Lucy Cousins, and Blue Chameleon by Lucy Gravett. Anything by Lucy Gravett is brilliant, but that's the only one he'll read...
