Puffin Post

My 8 yo daughter just spent all her savings on a subscription to Puffin Post :o) Do any of your DCs get it?
I was surprised that the welcome pack was pinky purple in colour and had some pink stationary inside, would have thought a love of books and reading was a gender neutral activity - anyone got a boy who gets Puffin Post and was his pack pink too?

I actually emailed them to ask if the packs were the same for boys and girls and they said they were. Am trying to avoid pink stuff atm.

supermama she's 8. I was a member of the Puffin club when I was little. I remember winning an art comp and getting a book review published. They actually sent me a book to review, I thought I was in heaven :o)

We have had all sorts of colours in renewal packs, TBH.

DS has had it for a few years (as Christmas present from GPs), and much as he loves the magazine and the competitions, he currently has a backlog of books to read (he does like reading, but doesn't have much time at home) and most of the cost is really in the "puffins for nuffin" so we decided to give it a miss this year and reconsider next year.

What was the outfit for puffin this year, Supermama? DS's puffin has a postman outfit and a superpuffin one.

DontCallMeBaby · 17/01/2012 17:03

It's Olympic Puffin this year!

stealthsquiggle · 17/01/2012 22:27

oh Sad - I sort of wish I didn't know that. I now feel like DS's puffin is missing out on an olympic puffin outfit and it's all my fault.

DS does have a huge backlog of books to read...

JiltedJohnsJulie · 18/01/2012 10:22

Erm, what's the Puffin Post?

stealthsquiggle · 18/01/2012 10:43

this is Puffin Post - but it's a revival of something which existed in the 70s/80s and was much loved by me and apparently by other MNers.

Out of interest, what sort of books are on the list to choose from each month? DD might like a subscription, but it only makes sense really if she's likely to want one of the books offered & it looks like you can't see what the lists are if you're not already a member.

stealthsquiggle · 18/01/2012 11:29

Takver - DS's membership has now lapsed, so I can't see this month's list - but there is usually a pretty good selection - fiction and some non-fiction, range of reading ages and good summaries of the books. DS has never been short of options on what he wants, although I will confess to occasionally steering him away from the more "junk" (IMO) books. When DD reaches that stage I daresay I will be biting my tongue and trying to remember all the truly rubbish books I read as a child so as not to object to yet another rainbow fairy (or equivalent) book, but there are always more (to my mind) interesting gender-neutral choices along with the fairies and spies.

Takver · 18/01/2012 12:45

hello again Stealth - not really stalking you honest - having just seen your ds' tastes on the other thread I suspect dd would be quite happy with the selection :)

stealthsquiggle · 18/01/2012 13:00

I was thinking the same! Animal books (mostly but not exclusively dragons) are DS's default choice and there was always something there.

accidentprawn · 18/01/2012 16:03

olympian with torch!!
