Which Roald Dahl do I Start With?

Would like to read a Roald Dahl to my 5yo DS as a bedtime/chapter book read.

He hasn't had any read to him yet so am wondering where to begin.

As a child I think I was read Charlie and the Chocolate Factory first and that got me hooked but I'm also wondering about the Twits???

I would say the BFG - but its all about personal preference!

ShowOfHands · 13/12/2011 22:17

4yo dd likes Matilda and The BFG best. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and The Witches second. Everything else third.

Thats one of the few RD books I haven't read!!

Its quite a long book, no?

Ds2 is 5.

We have done the twits, magic finger and in the middle of George's Marvellous Medicine. In that order.

Oh also loves The Enormous Crocodile

I don't think its longer that Charlie&etc but its been a looong time. Anyhow it's Fabulous Grin. Ooo the Witches is good I'd forgotten about that show

workshy · 13/12/2011 22:20

george's marvellous medicine

the story moves along quite quickly so it's good for an introduction to chapter books

itsstartingtofeelalotlikexmas · 13/12/2011 22:20

Fantastic Mr Fox!

Llareggub · 13/12/2011 22:20

My 4 year old DS loved George's Marvellous Medicine and The Twits.

JennyPiccolo · 13/12/2011 22:20

George's marvellous medicine was my favourite when i was a tiddler.

Albrecht · 13/12/2011 22:21

Twits I would say. Also Revolting Rhymes.

wellybobs · 13/12/2011 22:21

The Twits went down well here.

Sillyoldelf · 13/12/2011 22:22

The Witches is fab . My 3 year old absolutely loves that story ! Roald is certainly very clever at making a subject that sounds potentially scary into something that seems just so comical to children ! Also love Matilda and georges marvellous medicine is fab too.

CDMforever · 13/12/2011 22:23

Yes George's MM does sound like a good idea, DS would love the idea of making disgusting potions etc and the horrible Granny is fab too.

Thanks all Xmas Smile

Ooh ooh . George, no Danny... No Mr Fox!

I remember my mum reading me the BFG when I was 6. Then I read all the others. Brilliant!!!

My 5 yo has read The Enormous Crocodile, George's Marvellous Medicine, Charlie & the Chocolate Factory, The BFG, The Magic Finger. We've bought him a few more RD books for Christmas. He loves them and will lie in bed in the evening for hours reading to himself Grin

CDMforever · 13/12/2011 22:24

I still have my original copy of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and it still smells of chocolate.....well, it does to me Smile
