Fiction for 16 year old DS?!

Trying desperately to get DS, 16, back into reading - used to read loads.
Now, the b....y consoles have taken over.

DS used to read Pratchett, Pullman as well as a host of teenage authors.

Any suggestions for a reluctant older teenager? I sometimes think that if they're reading at this age, it may become a lifelong activity - that's always a possibility, at least. Thanks!

Philip reeve - mortal engines?

I love those books.

ImpYCelynAndTheIvy · 11/12/2011 18:58

Opened this to suggest Mortal Engines. I second Kayano.

Ender's Game by Orson Scot Card - fantastic Sf book with prescient ideas about computer games!

GurlwiththeFrothyCurl · 11/12/2011 19:07

Oh and the Hunger Games trilogy by Suzanne Collins.

pointydog · 11/12/2011 19:16

The Patrick Ness trilogy

The Enemy/The Dead/The Fear 'zombie' series by Charlie Higson.
I second Ender's Game and Mortal Engines.
The Game of Thrones books by George RR Martin, if they like medieval-style fantasy (do they play Assassins' Creed? or similar games)

Thanks all - had a look at Reeve's website and ordered Mortal Engines to see how DS gets on with it. Now looking at the other suggested titles - really grateful. Local library used to be a good place to browse teenage fiction. Very little now.

How about graphic novels and comics (2000AD for example)?

PomBearAtTheGatesOfDoom · 15/12/2011 18:08

Neil Gaiman - he's sort of a darker reflection of Terry Pratchett. American Gods, Neverwhere, and Anansi Boys are all good. He wrote Stardust too for the film but that's a bit more "girly" than his usual fare.

LeMousquetaireAnonyme · 15/12/2011 18:14

He is an almost an adult! let him read anything.
Have you try mangas and bandes dessinees? Or some fanfic from is favourite programme?
BTH at 16 he will probably refused anything you (i.e parents) suggest. Let things lie around or go with the flow of his friends.

I think the Eragon series by Christopher paolini is excellent very gripping and alot more detailed than the film. It is a fantasy about a young fifteen year old boy who gets bonded to a dragon.

mumwithdice · 16/12/2011 11:29

Try Tim Powers. If he likes Pratchett, he might enjoy them.

MostlyFine · 26/12/2011 09:39

David Gemmel and Raymond E Feist - proper adventure fantasy and excellent for boys... you have to start at the beginning with feist though as the later books are not as good.

'The Road' is a great book and suitable for a 16 year old I should think
