Shoe Baby - £600! Does anyone know why?

My DS loves this book, he goes to bed shouting 'SHOE' every night. Unfortunately we only have a library copy, which I know we can't have forever. I've looked for a copy to buy on line and came up with this:
www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Shoe-Baby-Joyce-Dunbar-Brand-New-/260782770598?pt=Pre_School_Picture_Books&hash=item3cb7dd49a6#ht_1977wt_932. Now, to me that seems quite a lot to pay Shock. I have also found it for about £30 on amazon. Again Shock. Can anyone explain what on earth is going on?? I just don't understand!

Xmas Shock does seem very expensive! Over £50 on amazon now! Have found it on the guardian bookshop though for less than £5 [[http://www.guardianbookshop.co.uk/BerteShopWeb/viewProduct.do?ISBN=9781406301618 here]

CaptainMartinCrieff · 09/12/2011 14:08

PM Nickelbabe she might have one in her shop?

bumpybecky · 09/12/2011 14:09

that eBay shop is the midas-book-store - I suspect the pages are made of gold...

heymammy · 09/12/2011 14:11

WEIRD! Here is a regularly priced copy:

heymammy · 09/12/2011 14:12

Oops, just realised it is out of stock. Must be supremely popular!

spartafc · 09/12/2011 14:37

Thanks for the suggestions! Am laughing at pages of gold, it would explain the price though!
Maybe it's out of print, although the library copy we have was bought in May '10, so not ever so long ago.
Frankly, I am sick of the stupid baby hiding in a shoe and saying 'how do you do'. But DS cannot get enough of it. Funny.

Ah, the Guardian bookshop says the book is being reprinted. But I can pre-order. Thanks MelissaM.

the pricing on some books is made up using weird algorithm ;)

I read about it few weeks ago

Meglet · 19/12/2011 17:43

It's being re-printed in the New Year. I'm in the Long Nose Puppets FB group and they put the message up a few weeks ago.

We bloody LOVE Shoe Baby and Flyaway Katie in this house. If you haven't seen them live make sure you go if they are playing locally. Their shows are beautiful.

LynetteScavo · 19/12/2011 17:50

The ebay one is now over £1K Shock

I would be tempted to "loose" the library one, pay the library the £5 or whatever for it , and ebay thier copy .

spartafc · 19/12/2011 20:22

Ooh, Meglet, is Flyaway Katie by the same people? I've not heard of that, please tell me it won't cost me millions to get hold of it!

I'll definitely look out for the puppet shows, I'd read about them in my desperate googling attempts to find the book for less than £30.

LynetteScarvo you have no idea how tempted I am. We've just had to take it back to be allowed to renew it again (we've had it since about June I think and we weren't allowed to renew it on line anymore). I don't think I'd even ebay it, I'd just keep it. It has really grown on me.

yes, same author. Flyaway katie is on Amazon. The soundtrack is fab, I have some of the songs on my ipod.

We saw Flyaway Katie earlier this year. It was magical. My DSIS took DS to see Shoe Baby 3 years ago and they loved it.

spartafc · 19/12/2011 21:14

Thanks so much for telling me about it, I'm going to bob over to Amazon and order it in a bit. I'll have to look out for the soundtrack too.
It looks like Shoe Baby is in Brighton for Christmas. That would have been a perfect Christmas treat, shame we live really, really far away from Brighton!

What happens is that 2 sellers have a copy and they are both setting their prices using crappy pricing algorithms that set the price at "other blokes price + 2 quid" and no actual humans look at the numbers and both algorithms just go up and up and up. Always funny when you catch it happening - in no way proves that anyone would ever pay that price.

swanker · 19/12/2011 21:27

OMFG! It is now £1200 Shock

They must have some kind of pricing algorithm that looks at how many watchers there are, and puts the price up.

Let's all 'watch' it, and see what happens [evil ] Grin

I wonder how they got the name 'midas' eh?

thisisyesterday · 19/12/2011 21:32

spartafc if you let the library know how much you love it they may let you have it once it's withdrawn, they withdraw stuff after so many issues so it's worth an ask?

Meglet · 19/12/2011 21:34
spartafc · 19/12/2011 21:34

I've considered doing that 'ask a seller a question' and just putting seriously?????
Algorithms for book sales, eh? Madness gone mad. Grin

spartafc · 19/12/2011 21:36

thisis really? I might do that. Our librarian is one of the loveliest people I know so I think if it was possible to do that, she definitely would. I'll ask her, thanks for that!
meglet - I WILL BUY IT!! Grin
