Help with finding a quote from "A little Princess"

boogiewoogie · 01/12/2011 23:01

"I am a princess. All girls are. Even if they live in tiny old attics. Even if they dress in rags, even if they aren't pretty, or smart, or young. They're still princesses. All of us. Didn't your father ever tell you that? Didn't he??

Where abouts is this in the book? Or is it just in the film? Anyone know which chapter roughly?

Thanks.

I don't remember it from the book...

Ponders · 01/12/2011 23:03

Sara would have said clever, not smart - that's an Americanism

boogiewoogie · 01/12/2011 23:05

I've read it fairly recently and couldn't find it unless I missed it.

I think it must just be in the movie

boogiewoogie · 01/12/2011 23:10

Okay. Thanks.

In the book the quote is more like girls should always behave like a princess, rather than that they just are princesses. It comes after the chapter where Sara finds a sixpence, buys six rolls and gives five of them to erm Phoebe was it? The street waif.

imdb says she says it to Miss Minchin?

Ponders · 01/12/2011 23:27

ITV made a version with \link{http://www.amazon.co.uk/Little-Princess-Nigel-Havers/dp/B0013DJEJQ\Maureen Lipman & Miriam Margolyes as the Minchins & Nigel Havers as Captain Crewe.} That was fab Smile

(there was also a \link{http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0031580/\1939 film with Shirley Temple as Sara} - Queen Victoria was in it - it's comical Grin)

boogiewoogie · 01/12/2011 23:27

I thought that she may have said it to Miss Minchin when she answered her back after Miss Minchin slapped her.

Yes Ponders. I remember that being on over Christmas I think but I never got to watch it.

I'm not sure its in the book but you can try searching for it in here - you'll have to do it chapter by chapter but quicker than reading the book.

Ponders · 01/12/2011 23:34

That sounds about right, boogiewoogie - with her head held high

we had the ITV one on VHS (may still have it somewhere). It was a wonderful production - if you ever see it shown again, record it!

That was the films interpretation. Still a lovely film despite the American slant.

"Whatever comes", she said, "Cannot alter one thing. If I am a princess in rags & tatters, I can be a princess inside. It would be easy to be a princess if I were dressed in cloth of gold....... (Chapt 11 "Ram Dass" )

Miss Minchin to Ram Dass about Sara
"The child is neither truthful nor grateful, I suppose now you feel you are a princess again?" (Chapt 18 "I tried Not to Be" )

Ponders · 01/12/2011 23:40

chapter 11 has a lot of princessy talk in it

Thanks for that, Grimma Smile I have the book somewhere but haven't read it for ages

Bossybritches22 · 01/12/2011 23:42
