Could anyone recommend a picture book about about the birth of Jesus. Not very religious myself but was trying to explain to DS who is 4 about Christmas and the birth of Jesus and thought a picture book may be the best way.

Will look for a children's bible tomorrow but if anyone had specific recommendations.

Can't link as on phone but go to amazon and search "usborne the story of baby Jesus".

Ds is 3 and got it this year and loves it. £4.99. Bargain!

Thanks I think I will order that.

If you can;t get it, then either

there's a red fox book about a cross innkeeper who turns the Holy Family away - can;t recall it, but funny,

or Jan Pienkowski's Christmas, where the pictures are truly wonderful - silhouettes - and although the language is traditional you can make up your own as you go along and there is something differnet to see everytime in the pictures.

Jan Pienkowski's Christmas is a favourite with us, parents too!
Or Little Owl and the Star by Mary Murphy which is just sooo heartwarming

we also have a version of the story from the POV of the Donkeys baby but I can't remember what it is called and its in DS room at the moment.

I shall go have a look if I can find it on amazon!

Time, never met anyone else who loves it! Ds recently pretended to be the elephant that doesn't want to go on the ship...

the red Fox book - Jesus's Christmas party...

Thank you all for your recommendations. I went to the library and found a couple there but I may search if the library has these as well. He seems to be enjoying the stories and although I am not very religious I am glad to teach him Christmas is not just about Father Christmas and presents.

Spendthrift, have you seen his Easter one - equally wonderful

No Tree for Christmas, Marian Lashbrook..can't believe I didn't think of it before. Just right for 3-5's. In fact, must dig out our copy for DS3 (4). My older two loved it, and it has a lovely message of Jesus being the first ever Christmas present

PotteringAlong · 26/11/2011 23:04

Definitely jesus' Christmas party!

Time - yes, but much much harder to find - have been looking to buy it for godchildren and not easy.

He once stayed with my mother, teaching her kids, and was lovely and inspirational.

I just bought The Christmas Book by Dick Bruna to read to my class of 4-6 year olds. It is simple, clear and beautiful.

timetosmile · 30/11/2011 00:03
