Books about friendly dogs...

My 6yo DS has developed a phobia of dogs in recent months, and it's getting to the point where he doesn't want to go to the park in case we see one. I'm on a mission to try to make him feel a bit better about them, and was wondering if you know of a book that is about, or features heavily, a nice kind dog. He's reading the Horrid Henry ones at the mo (to give you an idea of his reading ability) but more complex ones would also be fine, as I'd read to him.

Thanks.

Boodil My Dog is meant to be a good one, however haven't actually read it myself. What about Lassie? ...that may be for an older reading group.

A pity he is 6 because I was going to recommend Ant and Bee and Kind Dog but he is probably too old!

There is an Allan Ahlberg book called Woof which is about a boy who turns into a dog and it might be more suitable for your sixer.

IIRC a very nice dog features in Nick Mack's Good Luck.

When I was small I loved Ribsy by Beverly Cleary.

Better link that lets you browse the book

Opening paragraph: "Henry Huggins' dog Ribsy was a plain ordinary city dog, the kind of dog that strangers usually called Mutt or Pooch. They always called him this in a friendly way, because Ribsy was a friendly dog... People liked Ribsy, and Ribsy liked people." :)

Just remembered the Sophie books by Dick King Smith. They are absolutely lovely for reading aloud, and she is devoted to her dog (Puddle?).

Brilliant, thank you!
