Any suggestions on good books for 9 and 11 yo DSs?

Due to the amount of toys they have and don't look after my boys (nearly 9 and 11.5) are getting mainly books for Christmas this year...

They are both of a similar reading level and are into Beast Quest at the moment but have also been reading Diary of a Wimpy Kid, some Jeremy Strong stuff, Roald Dahl, ... According to Humphrey and DS2 likes Horrid Henry.

I'm thinking fantasy stuff and funny stuff is probably what they like the most although I might get some Michael Morpurgo stuff too. Any suggestions for more good reads?

What about the mr gumm books and the ones written by David walliams?

Takver · 13/11/2011 17:28

If they haven't read them what about:

Captain Underpants (very very funny)
How to Train your Dragon series
Lionboy trilogy
Percy Jackson

Also, Red pyramid etc by Percy J author, longer might suite 11 year old.

Ooh, great, thank you! I had looked at the Mr Gumm and David Walliams ones, The Book People have got some of those on offer too Smile The 11yo is not as into reading as DS2 so shorter books suit him better, he tends to get bored reading if its too taxing!

I would def. look at Captain Underpants too - there's lots of comic-style bits in them, so less challenging in terms of length.

Horrible histories might go down well if they like a bit of non-fiction, would also second Mr Gumm & they might like Marcia Williams if they like cartoon style books that they can get through quickly.

My son (11) is reading War Horse at the moment - I don't think he would have chosen it himself (it was a present) but he's really enjoying it.

Siobahn Dowd's The London Eye Mystery. DS - not into reading really, save for the Percy Jacksons and Captain Underpants - loved it. Not too long, but he and DH really enjoyed trying to work out what had happened.

startail · 14/11/2011 21:04

Kensuke's Kingdom is DD1s favourite

Hummingbird2 · 15/11/2011 13:20

For your keen reader, try John Flanagan's "Ranger's Apprentice" series. Seems to go down well with 11 year olds, perhaps even more than Percy Jackson.

For DS2, the Tom Gates books and Jake Cake. If he likes football, Tom Palmer's books (Football Academy) are great.

Thank you for all your suggestions! I have just placed a large order with The Book People (40 books for £41!) in which I have ordered some Michael Morpurgo, Mr Gumm, David Walliams, Alex Rider series and some others which caught my eye! Very chuffed Grin I'll take your other suggestions with me to the book shop/ebay/amazon as The Book People didn't have them on offer. What a lovely shelf of books my boys are going to have!

I was so going to suggest Alex Rider, my 10yo loves them.

Looks like we're now onto the birthday list, but how about:

"The Owl Service" Alan Garner
Terry Pratchett
