Any survivor /apocalypse recommendations please?

For DS2 aged 13 who is currently going through a Zombie Apocalypse phase?
I have just got Zone One by Colson Whitehead from the library. Checked out reviews on goodreads/amazon for suitability and it looks as though it might be heavy going.
I know the subject matter is not to everyone's taste but he has really enjoyed all the Gone series and other similar ones and I'm looking at adult fiction now.

If you are asking for recommendations, it is helpful if you actually mention the "other similar ones" your son has already read as well as the Gone series.

I really enjoyed the Last Survivors trilogy by Susan Pfeffer.

Forest of hands and teeth by carrie ryan. DH enjoyed these very much even with the female protagonist. He lives YA zombie apocolypse at the moment. I will poke him tomorrow for more suggestions.

Maze runner by james dashner was good dystopia, no zombies though.
