Does anyone know what this book was that I remember from my childhood?

I read it on holiday when I must have been about 9 or 10 - am 40 now so quite a while ago Grin

All I can remember about it is that it involved a young girl who was in a coma for several months, perhaps after an accident, and wakes up on board a ship. Her hair has grown really long, and she is wrapped up in furs to keep warm, and a sailor gives her a bowl of soup when she wakes up.

I have no idea what it was called but I can remember really enjoying it and feeling sad when I reached the end - can anyone help me to identify it?

Thanks!

It is called Nightbirds in(or it might be on) Nantucket by Joan Aiken.
The girl is Dido Twite from the brilliant Black Hearts in Battersea series.

It's Nightbirds on Nantucket. I have it (along with a lot of Joan Aiken) behind me. Smile

Wolves of Willoughby Chase is the first.
