can anyone recommend a good place to buy new books for toddlers online?

The Book People. Good selection, often heavily discounted.

does anyone use Amazon, or are they too expensive?

Amazon. I always find them cheaper than Red House/Book People for the books I'm after (and quicker delivery).

Also 'the book people's which is parent company of red house. Chip as chips especially if you look for the 'bundles'
