Running out of ideas for 11, nearly 12yr old DS!

DS has just finished Y7 and will be 12 at the end of August. He is quite a keen reader and I really need to stock up on some ideas for a reading list for him.

I have just picked up the first 2 books from the "Dark is Rising" series which he was going to save to take away on holiday, but he had "nothing else to read" and started the first one yesterday. He is over half way through now!

Any ideas please?

i will ask my ds1 who is the same age (will be 12 on 19th aug) he is also a keen reader and reads VERY quickly, he is in bed now, so will ask in the morning :)

oh does he like history books etc as well as novels? only my ds1 is very into historical biographies, esp those of ww1/ww2 soldiers and pilots etc?

i just tend to let him go to the library and browse bookshops himself.

He is more into fiction, fantasy, magic..etc The likes of Darren Shan, Harry Potter, Percy Jackson. He has just completed The Power of 5 by Anthony Horowitz and is eagerly awaiting the next book!

We have quite a limited selection at our local Library but I have just placed 8 books on his reservation list online!

yes my son likes the darren shan books and anthony horowitz as well.

its worth getting the library to order books in, ours does that so am guessing all branches do.

Has he been through all the Rick Riordan and Anthony Horowitz books?

He could also try the Neil Gaiman one set in a cemetery (name temporarily eludes me), or perhaps the Hitch-hikers' Guide to the Galaxy series, or enter Terry Pratchett's Discworld. Classic sci-fi like HG Wells might go down well, as might some detective classics like Wilkie Collins or Arthur Conan Doyle.

Oh, and Neville Shute, Gerald Durrell, PG Wodehouse and some Daphne Du Maurier.

We found some children's books by Carl Hiaasen today. DS hasn't read it yet, but I'm quite excited because I like him very much!

DS called down from bed asking if he could have an extra 5 minutes reading time to finish his book. Apparently it was awesome! So it looks like I will need to find Green Witch(?) and The Grey King.(?)

Yes, our library does order in from others but there are many books that are not on their website lists.

My 12 yo DS loves the following:

Mortal Engines series - Philip Reeve (his favorites I think)
Chronicles of Ancient Darkness - Michelle Paver
Artemis Fowl - Eion Colfer
Inkspell - Cornelia Funke
The Tamarind books - Nadia Aguiar
Wind Singer trilogy and Seeker triloy - William Nicholson

I am number Four by Atticus Lore, in paperback and the second of what I hope will be a series is published in August. My 12 yo loved it and reported it to be much better than the film.

Got a call from the library today, Inkdeath is in but not Inkspell yet. DS is happy because The Throne of fire is also in. Trying out Reckless and The Thief Lord by Cornelia Funke but have no idea what they are like.

Second all IndridCold's suggestions, also JP Buxton I am the Blade and sequel, Zizou Corder Lionboy triliogy and Halo, perhaps Alan Garner if he likes Susan Cooper and, of course, Phillip Pullman.

On my WWW travels I spotted The 39 Clues books...opinions please? Sorry cannot remember the author at this moment in time!

11yo DS loved them (he insisted I special order them in) says "They're quite good... They're like a detective book" he's implying the difficulty of the puzzle to solve was about right (but then admits he just skimmed the dialogue to solve the mystery part!) and the reading level was a bit too easy for him (he's quite ahead of average for his age). "It's very cold, because people do die in it.... the writer acts as if it's no big deal... says
they have died, and that's that... they're all after the same thing but they're willing to kill for it." (but the deaths aren't violent, just mentioned).

Says that with Harry Potter you have to read it all to follow the story.

I can tell you about a lot of lit for this age group that I personally find too violent! Star Wars & Star Trek Novels, if he's into that. and DiscWorld (luckily DS not into ).

Has he read the Eragon books by Christopher Paolino? (I know my friends 14 y/o avid reading ds likes them, so I think they cover quite a wide age range.)
