my eldest is 6 and we have read the first 4 books. My youngest is 5 and we started on and 2 but he got bored with 3.

My dd was able reading age wise start to read them herself at 6, but I've just bought them now and she's nearly 9. Tbh, her opinion so far is they're not as good as classics like Treasure Island. Which I agree with - they're badly written.
I'm not snobby about them - she can read them, and I'm sure she'll enjoy them. But why prioritise them early when there are so many better books about to either read aloud or read oneself? I gave dd The Hobbit as well at the same time as the set of HP... Much better IMO Grin

DS is 9 (10 in Sept) and has just started reading them.

My two oldest, aged 7 and 9, have been reading them over the last couple of months and are just on the last one now.

JKR aimed at the original books at 10 year olds and the storylines grew with the characters.
