Summer Circus Library Challenge

Are your children taking part? How old are they? What will you do if you are away?

DS1 is keen to take part (for the first time - he is 5) but we are away for the whole 6 weeks so will miss all ofthe assocated activities. I think he will still enjoy it and our librarian has said we can sign up early as we will be leaving 2 days before they start the sgn up.

I am doing this with my 4 y o DD. She can't read yet, but I will be reading books to her and talking to her about them. I will complete the forms and she gets to collect stickers etc from the library. I don't think our local library is doing much more than this, but it's a good thing to do both to encourage reading and to support the library I think.

Doing it with all 3 DC's, aged 10, 7 and 3, even though the youngest can't read as such yet, but recognises lots of letters/knows the sounds and can blend a bit. Will miss the activities at out library though as we will be away for most of the summer and it is a bit of a trek to town for us.

bloody library challenge. My DS primary school seem to be in competition with the other local primary school and lay the big guilt trip on you if you don't take part. Well excuse me for actually taking my children away camping during the summer holiday and interacting - yes they all read and as a family we have shed loads of books, but I will not pressure them to get through 6 books for the sake of a poxy sticker. In the holidays we live outdoors and any reading they do is wind down time before bed. So there ner!

I know it's not compulsory, which is why we don't do it, just naffed off with the school for their atttitude. My youngest thought he would get in trouble with the dragon head for not doing it last year. She actually read out how many children from the other school had taken part then berated the children for not doing it, saying that next year 'we have to beat them'. Does a 7 year old need to be made to feel guilty for not helping his school 'beat' the other school?

it's crap innit! At least they all like reading for the pleasure of it, not because they feel under pressure to. My DH and I are total book nerds so I guess it must have rubbed off. Agree it is a good way to encourage those that maybe don't have as much access to books to take part, just not for my lot. They're too busy not flushing the sodding toilet (started new thread on THAT one!)

You can't tempt me!!! I have glow in the dark wristbands that I stole from school last year and all the boys are shite with yo-yo's! muhahahaha!
