essential picture books

I don't have access to a library but want to build up a good collection of books for DD. Which picture books are essential to own/read or do your DC love?

Come on, help me make Amazon richer!

I find it easier to recommend authors rather than individual books, as there are so many wonderful ones by each person. My personal favourites are:
Quentin Blake
Shirley Hughes
Anthony Browne
Jez Alborough
Eileen Browne
Dr Seuss
Emma Chichester Clarke

Most of the books published by Barefoot Books are beautiful.
The board books by Herve Tuillet are quite special.
Will see if I can find you any good recommendation websites.

BoattoBolivia · 12/05/2011 12:23

Try these sites for recommendations and reviews:
guardian children's books site
books for keeps
booktrust

And To buy from the book people have some amazing deals. I would get the julia Donaldson pack, elmer, mrs pepper pot, Richard scarry, red nose readers, Jill bennet, aliens and dinosaurs, and where's Sally, just to start with! But I have no room in my children's rooms for any more books!!!

piprabbit · 12/05/2011 12:25

You Choose is still a firm favourite with both my 7yo and 3yo. I quite enjoy it too, so long as I put a limit on the number of items we can choose on each page.

BoattoBolivia · 12/05/2011 12:28

Oh,yes, we love You Choose as well!

beijingaling · 12/05/2011 14:52

Thank you for the suggestions! Good lord but how cheap are the book people! Wish they did overseas delivery. Will maybe have to limit myself to an Amazon order until Christmas and do a huge delivery for when we go home then.

Thank you again.

Another vote for You Choose here. I agree with all the author suggestions made by BoattoBolivia, but would add Julia Donaldson, Michael Rosen and Judith Kerr. A plea for poetry books: look for some of the compilations by Jill Bennett such as "Noisy Poems" - I think that particular anthology works from babyhood up until about the age of 6 or 7.

WobblyWidgetOnTheScooper · 16/05/2011 19:09

Some of our favourites:

Snail and the whale, Monkey puzzle, the gruffalo, sharing a shell (Julia Donaldson)
Penguin (polly Dunbar)
Tim, ted and the pirates (Ian whybrow I think?)
The night pirates (?)
Wiggle (Doreen Cronin)
Ten little fingers and ten little toes (helen Cunningham?)
Mr Beast (?)
The little old lady who cried wolf (?)

TheCowardlyLion · 16/05/2011 19:15

Pumpkin Soup and the other books in the series are just beautiful. DS loved them. We also enjoyed the Blue Kangaroo series, Mick Inkpen's Kipper books and Martin Waddell's Little Bear series.

wearymum200 · 16/05/2011 22:07

In addition to all the above (and don't miss Cave Baby by Julia Donaldson, i think it's the best of all), also recommend:
Tatty Ratty
Farmer Duck
Dig Dig Digging (and the others in the series)
The Emperor of Absurdia
Katie Morag
Smiley Shark
Monkey and Me
We have run out of space on the childrens' bookcases....

You'll be able to spot that Julia Donaldson and Jill Murphy are my favourite authors and we always try and go for box sets (these also make great birthday presents) and books that include listening CDs as these are great for long journeys or rainy day singing. So if you're not bothered about the CD there are cheaper options.

Another good trick is to look for board books as these stand the test of time. I leave a set of these in the bedroom so ds can read them in the morning and sometime we find him sitting there looking at the pictures. Otherwise we kept the nice books like the Mick Inkpen collection in the magic cupboard and as a special treat he's allowed to pick nice books from there to be read, but don't risk having them ripped up. Especially if you want more than one kid you don't want to have to replace books.

The top four Jill Murphy books are great!
