Cool science/history/geography books for a 7yo boy?

thinking about getting my neighbour some books for his 8th birthday as he's always drooling over our reference books (preschooler ones and adult ones so nothing for his age)

His reading is ok, I think, but his english/comprehension is maybe a bit lower than average so I'd rather get something too easy than too difficult.

Can't really get any info on what he'd like or be able to read, as his parents don't speak much English and are very shy, and the boy is in that phase of saying he can do everything, he's read everything, he's the best at everything etc... :)

I think he'd enjoy something big and with lots of illustrations, and about lots of different things, maybe different aspects of science or different points in history or something?

Any ideas please?

The Book People / Red House normally do incredible value offers on job lots of Horrible Science / History, which should be perfect ..... But as the name suggests, they may not go down brilliantly well with all parents, especially if you can't communicate with them enough to sound them out on the subject.

my son has a great ships and pirates books with little tabs that you lift up for more detailed pictures, will see if i can find it! some of it's very gory too which usually appeals to boys Grin

Yes I've had a look on thebookpeople, couldnt see much for the right age. Will check out red house too thanks.

I'm a fan of horrible histories, I think for his present I'd rather get something with lots of colour photos, glossy pages etc? Y'know, something that he is desperate to pore over for hours. :)

Ooh is that the 'see inside' usborne series? DD has the dinosaur one and we are waiting for the space one to arrive. Maybe they'd be too easy? I haven't really looked at the text tbh - too busy looking at the pictures :o

We bought the See Inside planet earth for a friend's DD at the weekend - it's not too easy at all - lots to look at and read suitable for a 7 year old. We also have some of these which are good too. Hope that helps.

How about an atlas - the sort with lots of extra information about the countries? DS1 loves looking at maps.
