Please please please, need recommendations for good - challenging but not nasty/too adult - ghost/scary stories for dd. She's a great reader, but not too good about perservering, so it has to be gripping from the start. I know someone out there has to have the best recommendation!!

Century? It's a v recent novel and may be a bit 'young' for her and it's not brilliant by any means but okay in a 'harping back to the golden age of children's fiction' sort of thing.

Charlotte Sometimes isn't quite a ghost story but has echoes of one and is a wonderful book.

Playing Beatie Bow - a children's book but good and a bit creepy.

Why ghost stories?
These are great - short tales, so easily digested, but beautifully written and quite scary/disturbing.

Chris Priestley's done another one too I don't know that one, but I guess it's good. It was published first, so must have been successful for a second to be done.

Love the cover of your first link, Roisin. :)

How about Neil Gaiman's, 'Graveyard Book' too? A lovely story of a little boy who lives in a graveyard. Again, maybe a bit 'young seeming' but actually enjoyable for most ages from about 10-up, I'd guess.

And when she's up for a bit more of a challenge, The Red Room or The Telltale Heart.
