My DS is 8 and got a reading age of a 12 year old i need to find some books that will challenge him but that are suitible for his age and reading age which seems to be an impossible task

Diary of a Wimpy Kid series is great, really funny & a good moralily check too. Also Mr Gum by Andy Stanford - funny as hell!

Michael Morpurgo.

Harry Potter

Tolkein.

Ask the teacher too, or take him to the library and let him choose.

At that age (reading age of 16) I liked Horowitz (Falcon's Malteser), Ramona Quimby, Alan Garner, Chalet School (sorry!), Tolkein, Ian Serrailler, Judith Kerr.

What about RedWall?

torie- firstly, I wouldn't worry too much about 'challenging' him, nor about reading age - maybe just find him some stuff he likes to read?

DD's also 8 - she likes

  • lots of the classics (Narnia, Swallows & amazons series, Just William, etc),
  • the Roman Mysteries series
  • Horrible science, history, geography etc
  • all the How to Train your Dragon books
  • Charlie Bone

Non fiction is always good too - dd is interested in wildlife, fossils etc, but of course it would depend what your ds' interests were. There's no reason that a fluent reader can't read an 'adult' non fiction book if its something they're interested in (dd's friend likes to read tractor maintenance manuals Grin)

The Divide.

I agree with letting him choose and not worrying about challenging him - reading is for pleasure after all. Maybe a trip to library / book shop? The staff / librarians will help him.
