Am struggling a bit with Neilly Beag and some of the other names. Is the Murdo part of Murdo Iain's name a name or an epithet?

Neely Beg is roughly it: means little Neil.

Murdo is a name, quite often with another one, like Murdo Iain. Hope helps a bit

Neilly Beag is just Neil with an ee at the end. Beag means wee/little. Pronounciation varies between beg and buck depending on which area your gaelic comes from but I would say beg.

Murdo is a very common old man name in the Highlands.

Murdo is Mur-doe as in deer btw.
