Books for babies!!

Hi All,

Need a really good age-appropriate book for a baby girl aged 4 months... Any ideas??

Or - is it a gift? - just some children's classics as she won't appreciate anything for a while anyway.

I was going to get the 'That's not my...' but someone else has beaten me to it! Yes it is a gift, but her mum has specifically asked for age-appropriate! Might just get the 'that's not my...' anyway as there are so many to choose from! Thanks a lot.

at 4 months she isn't going to be interested in any book i wouldn't think

For that age, get a fabric book. They are bright, interesting and can be played with lots and lots.

At this age, DS loved the sounds of Orange Apple Pear Bear by Emily Gravett. When he was about 1 he was hooked on Monkey and Me, also by Emily Gravett. For a present, I would buy her OAPB, or both, in board book form. DS, now 2.3, knows them so well now (me too!) that he "reads" them to himself. They are both gorgeous books to read, look at and listen to.

The Amazing Baby range are pretty good - the only thing I can think of that a baby that age might actually appreciate, with lots of black and white pictures and huge baby faces. DD loved them.

Great minds Dilys

Peepo or The Babies Catalogue by Alan and Janet Ahlberg. Get the ones with hard board pages. My children loved these from babyhood onwards. (And they're much more enjoyable for parents than That's Not My...)

Like dilys and ihave, Amazing Baby gets my vote for that age - lots of pictures of babies and often have a mirror for baby to look at themselves. They were the only books my DS engaged with at that age.

I love Peepo. It makes me cry! Also love Each Peach Pear Plum and know it off by heart.
Although to be honest my son wasn't into them at 4 months but from 12 months or so was very very interested. If the mum wants age-appropriate I would say fabric.

Another vote for Janet and Allan Ahlberg. Their books are so great for babies.

And another vote from me for Janet and Allan Ahlberg! (The parent will get much enjoyment out of reading them too!)

My ds has always loved the Ladybird baby touch books. They're full of touchy-feely bits, flaps to lift, mirrors etc. He's 15 months now and still enjoys them.
If you're looking for good stories to read aloud I agree with J & A Ahlberg, I'd also suggest anything by Julia Donaldson- personally I find them great fun to read out loud.

DS had a cloth book from Mothercare at that age that he loved. Can't remember the exact name, but it was something like 'The Happy Safari Book'. Had flaps and a mirror and made noises etc.

What about buggy books, or bath books?

DS used to have one that as like a glove puppet with a book attached.

Galt do one which is a fabric book with slots for photos on each page, and a mirror on the last page. It's lovely and easily personalised.

DS loved and still loves Peepo Baby! by Georgie Birkett. Durable too, was his first book.
