Read alone books for DD - yr 1

DD is 5 almost 6 and I am after some recommendation for books for herto read alone. She has read the ORT Phonics read at home series and I am looking for something a little more advanced but still easily manageable to give her confidence as we move away from her being read to. She is a girly girl - princesses and fairies are all fine. Any thoughts?

M&S do a range of fairy tales (some with cds) that have a "simple" page and and a more complicated page for each part of the story. So the simple page would say something "Little Red Riding Hood went to the wood" and "Here is the Big Bad Wolf" whereas the other page would have a lot more detail. Dd likes them.

DD really liked the Ladybird 'Read it Yourself' books at that stage, I got loads of them from charity shops for her. There are some really nice ones, things like simplified versions of Heidi, retellings of fairy tales etc.

The Rainbow Fairies are good for building reading confidence, if you can face them. One or two words may trip her up though, so be on hand to help if needed. I remember my DD reading them when she was 5 and we talked about any unfamiliar words, which in turn helps to build her vocabulary.

Thanks - I think I have seen the rainbow fairy books in a magazine and they certainly seem to be her sort of "thing".

I'll look into the other suggestions too.

nancy, you're bound to find the Rainbow Magic books in your library. The first one is Ruby the Red Fairy - there are 7 'colour fairies' in the initial set.

If your library doesn't have them, dd is selling an enormous pile of the damn delightful things for 40p each, she has the first 6 books of that set, if you were interested I could find out how much postage would be & pm you.

Just one small warning, they are VERY addictive, your life will be over-run . . . .
