The Hunger Games - Suzanne Collins

tessofderbyville · 21/11/2010 21:57

Sorry that should be "fabulous".

Like the name, Tess. Am a Derbyshire lass myself!

Malory Blackman's Noughts And Crosses series.
Animal Farm.
Lord Of The Flies.
Re-reads of the crap that is Twilight.

Other than that, she is going through a non-reading phase at the mo, to my great consternation.

tessofderbyville · 21/11/2010 22:04

Thank u Bellig!!

My dd enjoyed Riders very much at 13. I didn't find out til she was half way through. Led to some very interesting conversations about threesomes........

ShrinkingViolet · 21/11/2010 22:10

was thinking I'll watch this thread to get some ideas for DD2 (12), but after seeing Seeker's "suggestion" then perhaps not Grin

tessofderbyville · 21/11/2010 22:16

That is awful Seeker, we'll give that one a miss. That's one of the pitfalls of this age; in many ways they are ready for adult books but not THAT kind of adult.

Dd read a lot of classics: Jane Austen, Vanity Fair, the Brontes (though Wuthering Heights was a bit much for her). Also Rumpole of the Bailey, Agatha Christie, P.G. Wodehouse. Also a lot of biography, particularly Antonia Fraser (Mary Queen of Scots etc).

BelligerentGhoul · 21/11/2010 22:19

When dd1 was around 13 she liked:

Sophie Kinsella's Shopaholic books
The Handmaid's tale
Jane Austen
About A Boy
A Handful Of Dust

Good teenage series include:
Across The Nightingale Floor series
The Knife Of Never Letting Go series

DD1 has been known to read some Georgette Heyers as light relief too and she just read and loved Rebecca.

tessofderbyville · 21/11/2010 22:23

Oh wow, thanks everyone - loads for us to be going on with. I think she would really like Rebecca and also I like the idea of some historical biographies Cory.

She has just bought the Malory blackman book ut I don't think she has started it yet

Also liked The Princess Diaries

ilovehens · 28/11/2010 18:53

My ds 12 is reading 'Once' by Morris Gleitzman and he recommends it. You also have to get 'Then' and 'Now' as well.

asdx2 · 28/11/2010 18:58

Dd is reading Fallen and Torment by Lauren Kate.

bruffin · 28/11/2010 21:27

DD loved Once as well

ilovehens · 28/11/2010 22:37

Bruffin, tell your dd that there's two other books after Once - Now and Then, in that order I think. ds is well taken with them and keeps urging me to read them.

bruffin · 28/11/2010 22:55

Thanks ilovehens
I told her when I read your post and she didn't know about the other books.

cilldara · 01/12/2010 19:50

DD aged 12 read my copy of The Help in holidays and loved it.

She has also loved The Knife of never letting go trilogy.

LadyGlencoraPalliser · 02/12/2010 10:43

There is a new Malorie Blackman out - Boys don't Cry - which DD1 has requested for Christmas. She adored the Hunger Games trilogy and is reading The Knife of Never Letting Go at the moment. Trashwise, I have bought her Fallen and Torment, by Lauren Kate, because she does go for that ghastly 'dark romance' stuff. She has also really loved To Kill a Mockingbird recently though, so things aren't all bad. She likes Kevin Brooks too - iBoy was last week's best read.
