Good illustrated books?

Can anybody suggest any books for a 5 year old who can read (and understand!) anything you give him but is reluctant to read anything without illustrations!?

What I mean is, he doesn't like chapter books (Beast Quest, Horrid Henry etc). He is capable of reading them but, without many pictures, they don't hold his attention for long.

Have you got a library nearby you could visit. In ours there are now quite a few Graphic Novels especially for children that are really popular, it's a great way to try before you buy. The staff should be able to help you out with suggestions too.

Hi,Im Maggie,after reading your message, thought I could help.My husband and I self published 2 childrens books a short while ago.Both are colour illustrated throughout. Titles are,, (,The house with no snow)and (Soooperb Spiders).The house with no snow, is about Bullying.The school whimp slowly shows he can over come his fear, and deals with the bully.. Sooooperb Spiders, shows that girls can be strong and assertive, while boys can be sensitive. Both are exciting adventure stories.If you pay for the postage I will send you them free.It would be helpful if you visited my facebook page, and shared it with your friends if your child happy with the books.

I can't recommend Christopher Wormell's books to you enough. One Smart Fish has just won the BookTrust Early Years prize - it's a lighthearted look at evolution through eyes of a fish who wants to walk on land. Then there's George and the Dragon (clever twist as the dragon is fiery and dangerous but complete wimp when faced by a mouse).

Again, another popular author in our house is Mini Grey - Biscuit Bear, Traction Man - both aimed at slightly older kids, ie school age rather than pre school.

My son likes Emily Gravett - there's one about spells with split pages.

NB I do work for Random House, who publish both Mini and Chris, so road test proofs on the kids but now twins are 6 they do really like these longer picture books. One Smart Fish came out again tonight alongside Rainbow Fairies.
