Grin which also brings me onto the cressida cowell books, which are fun for younger confident readers as well. ds loved those last year (how to train your dragon etc, there are about 6 or so).

Number devil was good, he's read this a few times. He's on Philip Pullman at the moment, he's written alot. He really liked maurice and his educated rodents.

he read the number devil last year - dd1 has got the philip pullman's at the mo - suspect they are on their way to him too.

Grin I can't think, there's books all over the house. Lucy and Stephen hawkins have written a couple about space, they were good.

Artemis Fowl, it's the best thing since sliced bread.
Percy JAckson
Fabulous Wonders series
Diamond Brothers mysteries for something funny.
Narnia
Red Wall
Phillip Reeves Mortal Engines
Spiderwicke
Hiccup the Viking (DS3's favourite)
Rangers Apprentice
Edge Chronicles (DS2's favourite)
Broken Sky
George's Secret Key to the Universe
Jake Cake (pretty easy but v. funny)
Horrible HIstories
Horrible Science et al.
Shadowmancer
Skulduggery Pleasant (DD's favourite)

Will try to think of some more.

DD's current favourites are Molly Moon (Georgia Byng) & the Roman Mysteries (Caroline Lawrence).

Loads of Diana Wynne Jones' books are suitable for 8 y/os - all the Chrestomanci series for example.

8yo DD has just discovered Jaqueline Wilson. I don't know about the reading level, but she's only just ready for the mature themes in those works.
She's also keen on Indie Kidd books(Karen McCombie).
