How to push for help - so scared we are sitting

My 8 year old DS has been poorly for 2 months mostly a UTI that is refusing to settle and he has tried every antibiotic under the sun. We've been to a&e for uti too. More antibiotics given. Recently elbow pains and joint aches. He can't sleep. Calpol every 4 hours. School and life has been stressful.

Have looked up symptoms. Omg. Leukemia?!! He has everything. I feel like I'm harassing my GP and I hate the slow system - we leave an Internet message for a call back. What can I do to speed up tests?? Please help. DS is so pale and hasn't been himself for a so long. Will anything be done if we rock up at a&e?

Thanks

Oh God how scary. But there are many less serious explanations for the symptoms.
Any chance you could find the money to go private?

Fanofpotato · 27/02/2026 09:32

Thank you for your message. Yes we have private but I guess need the NHS to refer us first? Blood tests etc? I'm finding it all so frustratingly slow. Currently sitting in children's a&e.

Looking forward to seeing the doctor. Just hope that i don't cry.

Handhold for you @Fanofpotato. Hopefully you are wrong and your DC is fine, but you are doing well being his advocate.

Wowsersbrowsers · 27/02/2026 13:02

NHS don't always need to refer you. Do you have an online gp? Call insurance and ask if you need to.

Sounds really difficult for you, hope you're doing ok.

Call your private healthcare people - I have Bupa and definitely don’t need an nhs referral. They set up an initial appointment with the Bupa gp and you go from there

Hi, I hope your son is ok and you found answers at a&e.

my daughter is extremely pale and had reoccurring infections. I am going to go to gp tomorrow as she’s complaining of tummy pains and headaches.

did you find any answers in blood test and the plane was? Thanks

Therightflipflop · 02/03/2026 18:08

@Cuppaandbiscuit has your DD had any blood tests? My DD was the same symptoms you describe and turns out she was coeliac

Fanofpotato · 08/03/2026 20:56

Hi all, hope your kids are doing ok. Bloods showed nothing off interest when we went to a&e. We have a paediatric appt tomorrow and tonight DS seems to have come down with the flu. 😩 Grateful for the appt tomorrow. 🙏
