Today’s pleasant surprise

I came back to work today after a week off. Had a message from my line manager asking if I had any plans to take annual leave off in July and August. I said no, told her it would probably be June or September so if she wanted to take time off at that time I’d be around to cover.

She then said - it’s just that I’ve had holiday requests from the three colleagues with children and I wanted to make sure that you were included in any arrangements if you also wanted time off then too.

(She knows that I prefer to take time off outside school hols but it was nice to think of me at the start).

That’s lovely to hear, I had a shit time with a colleague today because I’m childfree so it’s really nice to know there are good workplaces and colleagues out there because I’ve yet to find one but I’m hopeful.

That's really nice to hear.

I've found the workplace one of the most difficult places to navigate as a childfree woman.

It saddens me that this very basic consideration is so surprising, but I know how rare it is. Glad to read you’ve got a great manager OP!

That's really good of her

I too find it sad that we are so surprised, but equally think its very nice of her.
