What are we eating?

Hey all! Mundane chat time.

What are you all eating this week, next etc?
We fell in a bit of a rut after moving and having to find bearings in local shops, but it's getting better😁 Looking for some new inspiration and some fun chat!
I know there is a food section here, but lots of it are family friendly meals which I know usually. Still doesn't mean that I am good in planning kid's meals as proven by trying to serve sweet potato wedges to kids at bbq....

I even started kind of meal planning now (never did before) 😂. Just bought stuff which looked good and improvised.

So this week we plan
-Salmon trout (it's o cheap here!!! Love that fish ) stirfry with kind of spicy satay flavours going on

  • Chicken, veg, in spicy "Spanish" flavour tomato sauce with mashed herbed yogurt potatoes
-Salsa foul with chicken -Sauerkraut with chicken and potato

Have a bag of freekeh which needs some plan. Thinking of herby and balsamic roasted veg and chicken with it.

(note we are not pretentious cooks, we are mixed cultures immigrants)

For anyone who likes enchiladas, cooks only for 2 and has an airfryer, you can save up on oven time and money.
Made layered enchiladas in it and it was smashing and fast. Just prep everything like usually, then instead of rolling, layer tprtillas and the rest like lasagne, 15 min ona 180 and et voilà. Had lovely and faster "enchilasagne" than from oven. My airfryer is standard size so it wouldn't fit big tray for 4 portions.

I'm going to be zero help on this as I don't food plan. Maybe because I live in central London so there are shops within 100 metres that are open 24/7, maybe because I have ADHD so I get bored easily and food planning is right up there on the boredom inducing scale for me, maybe because I'm just a slacker, I don't know. 😂

I'm actually away at the moment and it meant I had to bring food with me for Sun evening as there won't be anything open where I was staying and it was torture for me!! I just hate food planning so much.

Tartareistasty · 29/08/2023 10:28

I feel you! I never did plans just got what looked good and made something. Also ADHD😂 And love cooking.

But I need to crack on with something otherwise I will need to buy new wardrobe. Or live on foul and chicken... Which is delicious but...

Your menu sounds lovely! I don't really plan, I just buy what looks good and decide each day what to eat but I think today I'll have steak. I'm definitely going to try enchiladas in the air fryer though! Good tip!

Tartareistasty · 29/08/2023 12:42

I used glass baking dish but any will work.

Steak is added to my shopping list! Inlove it with some potatoes and broccoli spears.

I've just had baguette, butter and pate for an afternoon snack Grin

I do like this time of year, I make a lot of crumbles and crisps (a crumble with an oat topping) with blackberries, plums and apples that I pick. I'm gearing up to more colder-weather type food, next week's food list has cauliflower cheese and a roasted root vegetable toad in the hole. But I'm still kidding myself it's summer, with some lovely stone fruit and cheese salads.

Planning a big Proper Roast with friends over when we start to have the chilly evenings.

GrannyWeatherwaxsHatpin · 29/08/2023 16:43

Oh, and I plan the hell out of my food! I like the challenge of seeing how well I can eat for a small(ish) budget. Plus it means I don't have to keep schlepping to the shops (even if it is Waitrose which means free coffee...)

TenOhSeven · 29/08/2023 17:18

Gosh, I wasn't aware that my childless status affected my diet. Hmm
This topic is a joke.

Tartareistasty · 29/08/2023 18:12

Who pissed in your soup?

Of course it can affect diet. Different budgets, time to cook etc. It's was supposed to be just bit of fun food chat. Soz

I can't wait to eat 'winter food' beef and mustard stew and apple crumble and custard will be the first things I cook when it gets nice and cold and I want the slow cooker on all day to heat the house.

They’re great, aren’t they? Bloody lovely, you can make ‘em with almost any fruit and they’re great for using up odds and ends of nuts, dried fruit, oats etc.

@TenOhSeven you don’t have to post on the thread if it offends you so much. Plenty of other ones in the forum.

GrannyWeatherwaxsHatpin · 29/08/2023 20:01

@Bowlerhatsarein I absolutely adore eating seasonally, when everything is at its best. Stews and roasts in Winter, the first asparagus and Jersey Royals in Spring, heaps of fruits and salads in Summer. Love it!

HundredMilesAnHour · 29/08/2023 20:21

I adore eating seasonally too but I like someone else to do the shopping and cooking 😂

I can cook (I'm told that I'm actually a very good cook) but I just get so bored with what I'm cooking that I lose all interest in eating it before it's even finished. I'm the same with packed lunches (which I hate with a passion).

Expensive delis were made for people like me. 😛Probably not helped by the fact that I used to live somewhere where it was cheaper to eat out for 3 meals a day than to actually food shop (and kitchens were tiny as a result).

musixa · 29/08/2023 21:08

I've been travelling all day today so the short answer is - absolute garbage!

Catsmere · 30/08/2023 04:18

Another no-help here - I don't food plan because at this retirement village dinner is provided. Most anyone has to do is look at the week's menu to see if they want alternatives to whatever the main meal is (like veg lasagna instead of corned beef and cabbage 🤮).

hattie43 · 30/08/2023 07:29

I need to start meal planning because I'm a constant grazer, I want to lose weight and get more fruit and veg in my diet .
I'm planning on getting together some really good slow cooker recipes now it's nearly autumn. I'm really busy so know I won't be cooking from scratch every evening , that would be setting me up to fail. Another mustn't do is buy sweet stuff because obviously I'll rag it .
I currently eat like a child and want to eat like a proper grown up .

Tartareistasty · 30/08/2023 07:32

I am pretty sure half my plan will not happen anyway😂 I am prone to "ooooooh this looks good" in shops😂
Already deviated...

@hattie43 I went around this by cooking extra few portions of things for freezer for days when I don't have time/am not in a mood. Worked wonders. Except when I am making soup... Ended up with 19 portions once🙈 I miss my big freezer now!

@HundredMilesAnHour I wonder if I am now in a place you were in. We have ok size kitchen but so bloody stupidly designed, it's doing my head in! Most couplez apparently don't cook due to time and it maybe ending up more expensive than ordering in. I love cooking though so I am persevering

Yeah. Ordered poke bowl on offer... Delicious though!
