Cut a long story short.
I have a new job starting in September.
Should I tell my family now or give 4 weeks notice?

Thanks

Are you a nanny?

Are you on a fixed term contract?
Normal contracts are on-going, so wouldn't need to be renewed.

4-weeks notice is per your contract terms I presume.

Personally, I would give a term's notice if possible, giving the family several months to find a replacement. However you only need to give the notice as specified in the contract.

It's nice if you can give them lots of notice, but then you run the risk of them finding a replacement quickly and giving you four weeks notice, leaving you without work until your new job starts.

Cynical maybe, but it happened to me...

Telling them now would be a lot of notice and may be being a bit too trusting of them (as BettyandLenny pointed out). If you could run to 8 weeks notice (ie. July) that should be reasonable for them to find your replacement. And if they have been good employers you can offer to help find the replacement or write them a reference.
