Never charged a retainer but I thought it was half fees 3 months before children start. I dont charge for bank hols but everyone is different.

No I don't charge them, if I have a space available I would ask for 2 weeks full fees to be paid as a deposit, but if I had another enquiry in the meantime I would ask for full payment to begin to hold the space.
6 months is a long time to hold a space open.
I wouldn't take a retainer unless I had the space currently available and I wouldn't be prepared to have half fees for 6 months.
I don't charge for bank holidays as I don't work them.
The joy of being self employed is you can do what you like and negotiate an agreement with the parents.
