I am planning on taking on an assistant, I am unsure of wages and paying tax and all the employer bit I need to adhere to . Anyone already got an assistant that could give me advice, I would be very grateful.

Sorry I forgot to come back

You need to register with HMRC as an employer & you get a CD rom which leads you through doing PAYE you pay your staff (using the CD) then you pay the HMRC your(their) tax NI & your NI (all worked out by the CD)

You use Business link to sort out annual leave entitlement & statutory entitlements (mat etc) & SSP

You need an employers liability cert (£5 from NCMA not sure about MM)

There are policies you need as a childminder with an assistant & as an employer eg HASAW - again check with Business Link

Any more info you need?

That sounds like alot of hassle , at mo I am waiting for her CRB to be done then will write to Ofsted and get her on a first aid course. Do you have an assistant? and is it a lot of extra paper work?

Well her wages are a certain amount

& 'being an employer' is a bit of work to set up then just maintenance

'being a childminding employer' is just a few policies (mine need updating)

Then you have to set up & do appraisal etc which is a pain
