I am new to the childminding stuff and have some one coming to meet me on wednesday. Problem is i'm not sure what to charge.
I think i maybe being a little soft when it comes to charging!! School finish 3.15 but on 2 days child has after school club. do i charge even though he's not with me to cover after school club being cancelled? Shall I charge extra for meals? If so, what should i charge? Do i only charge for term time? Is there anything else i need to consider?
Please help

I charge for the time they are at club as they quite often choose not to go or else school will cancel.

I charge for supper if they are staying after 5pm otherwise snacks are included. And I charge my normal hourly rate for after schoolies although I know some CMs that charge a little less for over 8s - which I may consider for the future as I think its quite a good idea

I don't charge while they're at the club but if it's cancelled I add it onto the next invoice. I charge extra for evening meals and breakfast but not for lunch or snacks.

I charge £12 per day for the hours 3:15 - 5:30 pm. I do not reduce the fee if they attend an after-school club during this time - the child is still taking up a place even if not with me iyswim - I can't take another child during the after school session time.

Meals are charged separately (£2 per dinner) and can be booked/cancelled the week before. Some prefer to have family meals at home, some prefer meals here - eg two children have piano lessons when they get home so wouldn't get their dinner til bedtime otherwise.

My CM charges £10 per day from 3.20pm - 6.15pm including hot tea

I am in south wales

DavidSussex · 08/03/2009 16:42

Am in Scotland.

My CM charges £30 per week, so £6 per day for before school 8 am - 9am and after school 3.15 - 5.30 latest. Includes a snack after school. No reduction for days not used.No retainer in holidays, but she often has dd during the holidays as well for £20 a day.

cat64 - thats a crucial point - the picking up again. I do a school pick up then have an annoying 45 min window when I can't really go home and if its peeing with rain can't go to the park so I charge for the time they are at club because I have to pick them up from it - if I've taken the car its fuel etc isn't it?

kayleigh - weight up things like whether you walk or drive and whether it includes 2 school pick ups in the space of an hour!

I'm in NE England and charge £4.50ph for before/after school - if I have the child in hols for full days then it is £3.75ph for those days (my normal fee). I include meals but have a 'kitty' for each child for things like soft play and outings - haven't had to 'negotiate' so far, but most of my mindees have come from recommendations, so have been lucky. I would charge even though child in after-school club - as ayla99 said, they are still taking up a place with you.

When you first start out, it's really easy to 'undersell' yourself and reduce fees to get the business - I did it and lived to regret it! Parent actually told one of my friends (though to be fair she didn't know she was my friend!!) that I was soooooo expensive - she was actually paying way less than other parents and she messed me around so much!

Charge what you are worth - go for it girl!
