should i be basing my planning for a 2 year old around early years themes? have been doing so far and ofsted seemed pleased but most of it goes over his head. bless him he just wants to play with toys!

your planning should be on what the 2 year old enjoys.

Observe your 2yo

X enjoys playing with 4 piece jigsaws

Link to "The Learning Environment" (for example)

Plan - provide 5 or 6 piece jigsaws

or

X enjoys eating melon

Link to "Health & Awareness"

Plan - provide watermelon for X to try

I was at a training course recently which said that our plans need to be flexible to fit around the child led activities and should even be thrown in the bin if necessary - an NCMA speaker.

If ofsted are happy and 2 year old is also happy - I wouldn't worry whether he is "getting it" or not - he probably is sub consciously!
