Are we supposed to do observations and daily diaries for older children over 5?

Children of this age are at school full-time, so it's up to the school to do their observations.

Re daily diary, if they are eating breakfast with me (then going to school), then come back to me tea etc... then yes, I would write what I fed them, anything of interest the teacher had told me etc. Keep it simple and not as complicated as the under 5s.

Personally I don't.

I don't either. I might make a note in my own diary if anything noteworthy took place, but otherwise I do not keep diaries for over 5s.

I've put in my handbook that I only do diaries until 31 Aug after their fifth birthday, but am willing to discuss a continuation beyond that date in certain circumstances. (some children may not have the communication skills needed, some are capable of effective communication but choose not to give full answers).

I keep my own diary of meals and activities provided so can refer to that. I have done food diaries for older children but parents weren't interested and didn't even notice when I forgot to send it home.

Am toying with the idea of giving them their own diary to write/draw about what they do here. Did a passport style diary in the summer holidays one-time which worked well, but think the novelty would wear off on a long-term basis they'll all think its a chore????

thanks for your comments guys having spoken to the mother she's not bothered and i don't think would even read it so would be a waste of my time. In fact she's not bothered about me setting activities, says her kids just like to go off and play which makes me feel like i'm not doing my job! but my daughter is in the same class as one of them so she is happy to entertain them
