Hiring a nanny with a drink driving offence

littlelongstockings · 02/04/2026 15:15

I interviewed a lovely nanny yesterday who I liked overall, however she has a DUI on her criminal record from 9 years ago, she is in her 40s so not young.
the position will not include driving my child around as she doesn’t currently have a car and isn’t open to using one of our cars, she will transport my child by bus or train.
would you employ a nanny with a background offence of DUI?

Nope.

Fable2024 · 02/04/2026 15:17

Nope

Did she actually tell you?

Fable2024 · 02/04/2026 15:17

Sounds to me like she’s lost her license

ClaredeBear · 02/04/2026 15:18

No.

TooPoor4PandaPooTea · 02/04/2026 15:18

Are you crazy? No. She has a DUI because she got caught. Most drunk drivers don't get caught the first time they do it.

Other than a lack of judgement, she got into a car knowing she was drunk and didn't care if she killed a child in an accident.

ShetlandishMum · 02/04/2026 15:19

9 years ago? Yes. I would consider it.

littlelongstockings · 02/04/2026 15:21

@Fable2024No she didn’t tell me, she sent me copies of her DBS etc before her interview so I saw it on there but she didn’t mention anything about it during her interview.

She said she wouldn’t want to drive one of my cars as “she would be worried she would scratch it” and she wouldn’t want the added cost for me with insurance.

She won’t have got lots of placements because of this.

Whats her employment history like?

She’s got too many points on her license and lost her license i would wager

TheHillIsMine · 02/04/2026 15:24

Of course not

TheHillIsMine · 02/04/2026 15:24

Of course not

Kosenrufugirl · 02/04/2026 15:24

I would if she is remorseful and you believe she is of good character overall. We all make mistakes in life every now and again

MrsTerryPratchett · 02/04/2026 15:24

My unfortunate opinion in this is that a lot of people with drink driving offences have them because of their relationship with alcohol, not their relationship with driving. Many many people I used to work with in rehab had them.

The worry isn't the driving, the worry is the drinking.

littlelongstockings · 02/04/2026 15:25

@Fable2024 She has worked as a teacher in a couple of schools abroad but no teaching or nannying here in the UK.

ClaredeBear · 02/04/2026 15:25

Did you ask for the DBS ahead of the interview? If so, what was your plan, should anything come up on the DBS? Did you ask her about it, because that’s the point of having them readily available, I guess. I personally wouldn’t take on someone because I’m hardline on this issue but also, she’s clearly got very poor judgement and as you say, she wasn’t a teenager.

Fable2024 · 02/04/2026 15:25

She didn’t get this DUI in her teens or twenties but in her thirties!!

was she employed at the time?

She’ll have tried and no one hired her

9 years ago when she got the dui…. What was she employed as at the time. A teacher?

She got in the car drunk and THIS was lack of judgement. It happened 9 years ago. The real issue to decide is what her character and judgement are now

AlohaRose · 02/04/2026 15:27

I don't think it is up to her to worry about additional cost on your insurance or a scratch on your car, if you have mentioned this during interview surely that risk is up to you? She must also be aware that you saw her previous DUI on her DBS so that would have been the perfect time to be upfront about it? Apart from her not mentioning it, are you even happy to have your child transported only by public transport? Does that work for you or would a driver make life easier for you? Regardless, I wouldn't employ her.

She was in her thirties at the time

The key is… what job was she in when she did this?

isthesolution · 02/04/2026 15:29

Possibly. I’d have asked her to explain it to me in interview and decided how I felt then.

I got in the car after half a bottle of vodka cos I’d had a bad day is very different to I was pulled over on New Years Day having had a good few drinks the night before. I had no idea I’d still be over the limit and I felt terrible for it and for not knowing.
