Redundancy at 9 months pregnant - do i get 9 months or 1 year funded hours for nursery?

Hi all,

I was made aware of redundancy at 6 months pregnant and I went on to work my final day as a result of this, 4 days before my son was born (planned c-section).

We need to reconfirm for 1st April childcare for eldest son, but my last SMP pay check was at end of Jan. As I am now technically going into the 'unpaid' portion of matt leave, would I still be eligible for funded hours? Or do I need to look into the grace period I have seen people talk about?

And if it is the grace period, how do I go about confirming this?

Thans in advance!

You wont be eligible to confirm as youre no longer employed. You are covered by a grace period until 31st March, possibly 31st August depending when you last reconfirmed.

You wont be eligible for 9 month funding for the baby as per your title until you return to work in new employment.

If you were already made redundant and you have had your full 39 weeks of SMP, then you aren't on maternity leave, but rather you are now unemployed, so you are correct that you're no longer eligible for the funded hours and cannot reconfirm. (You will still need to go to the reconfirmation page to change your details, so the system registers it properly.)

Your childcare provider should be able to check when your grace period ends, as they will be able to see the dates on their system.

For example, when we became ineligible, my child's nursery checked the expiry date for our code and that date was when we could no longer access the funded hours.

You’re unemployed so not entitled to free childcare

You are unemployed so you are not eligible. Grace period is only for those who have already been claiming funded hours at a setting. A child cannot start funded childcare when in a grace period

@Lillupsy OP is asking about the grace period for their older LO who is already in childcare, as they are going to lose their eligibility when reconfirmation comes up.

They confused matters by writing 9 month funding in the title
