Breakfast club and after school club is so expensive

I’ve accepted a new job at a school so my two children will be doing breakfast club and after school club. I’ve just worked out costs and it’s come to an eye watering £630 for the month.
After school club is £10 and is from the time they finish til 6pm, I’d be collecting by half 3 (children finish at 3pm and 3.15pm) so the £10 each just doesn’t seem fair. What at the chances the school would be able to reduce the amount considering I’ll only need 30 mins of afterschool club. I really want to do this new job, but it honestly doesn’t seem worth it with that, it’s more than my childminder

Our after school club is £15 until 6. No reduction for early collections. £10 is cheap. Our breakfast club is £8

Curlewwoohoo · 01/08/2024 16:43

Yeah I worked out i would earn £2 and hour while my 2 are in after school club. Not worth it for me.

chubbyvegan · 01/08/2024 16:44

Ours was £4 for the first hour/till 4, £8 until 5pm then the full £10 was until 6pm.

Booked in advance so they could plan staff.

I'd ask if they've considered something similar as most parents don't need the full 6pm.

WorkCleanRepeat · 01/08/2024 16:46

I'd ask them our school done a reduced rate for children being collected by 3.30.

PoshCoffee · 01/08/2024 16:46

Are you aware you can use tax-free childcare to help with costs?

oneplustwoplustwoplusone · 01/08/2024 16:47

£10 isn't expensive for three hours care but the fact that you only need 30 mins makes it not cost effective for you.

Does your childminder not do pick ups from school? Can you use tax free childcare on the clubs?

Mumofoneandone · 01/08/2024 16:53

Our school does 2 rates depending on time of collection. Your school is clearly doing a flat rate so that those that pick up earlier subsidise those that take the whole session. Does seem poor organisation.
Are you in the same school as the children or different?

ARichtGoodDram · 01/08/2024 16:54

You can ask them, but they're unlikely to change their costs as they'll still need to have the correct number of staff to cover your child

Could your childminder not pick up instead?

Glitterbiscuits · 01/08/2024 17:01

Have you asked your childminder to help?

ThursdayTomorrow · 01/08/2024 17:03

It’s unlikely they would offer reduced prices OP. Your children are taking up a place, staff will still need to be paid until after school club finishes.

Piccalino3 · 01/08/2024 17:07

I accept that £10 per day makes it unaffordable for you, childcare costs are hideous. Ours is £14 until 5pm and £18 till 6pm. I have 3 kids in primary school and I earn a decent wage but it's still a huge chunk. It feels like we'll never be free of huge childcare costs, and I was looking forward to end of nursery fees....

Yellowgiraffepinkdog · 01/08/2024 17:07

Breakfast clubs will be free soon !

DillyDeclutter · 01/08/2024 17:07

Could you start and finish later, have them in after school club for longer but not in breakfast club?

Marblessolveeverything · 01/08/2024 17:23

My After-school costs me 8 per hour and payable for the place regardless of attendance.

Whinge · 01/08/2024 17:30

Have you spoken to the school?

We offer wrap around care and staff children attend for free.

If it's a different school could you talk to the club and ask if there's a reduced rate?

Blondeshavemorefun · 01/08/2024 23:44

Very unlikely they will charge less

They have x spaces and prob a waiting list

They won't be able to fill 330/and will be out of pocket

If it is 30 mins can a mum friend pick up and take to house and you collect from her

Equally if on uc you can claim childcare costs

Jxtina86 · 01/08/2024 23:57

Our school does two rates but it's not well advertised. It's £17.50 for 3.15-5.45 which is what we pay as I don't collect DD till 5ish. But you can do a 4pm pick up and it's £7 for those 45mins (I only know this because another mum told me, they don't advertise it on the school website).

Breakfast club is £7. We pay through the tax free childcare so that helps too.

LostMySocks · 02/08/2024 00:10

If you have to book the full session could you keep the children in on some nights giving you time to do jobs or have some relaxation time so that you could then fully focus on them when you collect.
Or would your work consider flexible working with some longer days and then some where you could finish early enough for you not to need after school club?

Vivalavid · 30/01/2025 21:27

I work these and they don't charge enough, their ridiculously cheap, considering we have to be paid and resources! The price should go up.

Danikm151 · 05/02/2025 12:44

are there any extra curricular activities at the school? Usually free or a nominal fee and till 4pm?

This is what I used to do.
