Just thread a thread on NannyJob, no need to discuss why

I haven't read it before and the thing that shocked me most was the repeated references to half a day pay being "nothing" to their employers.

Fuck me as an employer of a CM half a days pay is the differnce between me having a night once a month and not going out at all

AIBU to be shocked by the cavalier approach to employers money!

Yours naively, KC.

And just for the record, I would like to point out that I drive a used Vauxhall Astra.

Gosh all these posts today are really reminding me what a lovely nanny I have. Lovely!

JamInMyWellies · 26/03/2008 14:34

blimey it has been a day of it for nannies and employers on here.

TBH I nannied for about 15yrs and I have been shocked at the behaviour shown on the thread that started it. Since when did employers and nannies do all their communication by email and web forums dont they have handovers at the end of the day where any probs are ironed out??

I also think its sad to see so many people chastising the nanny for going online - how many of you in your working day log on to mumsnet As far as I was concerned in every job I worked long hours and my employers were more than happy for me to take a bit of time to surf the net or watch daytime telly. Its not like nannies have regular sheduled lunch hours etc.

I feel a line should be drawn under this sorry affair and that the people involved directly go away and lick there wounds and possibly think about communicating in person in the future.

Kewcumber · 26/03/2008 14:36

Oh certainly I'm not in any position to chastise people for going online in working hours I'm slightly surprised that anyone looking after my DS would be able to do so wihtout having a major clear-up operation afterwards

Jam this thread is nothing to do with "that" thread. the nanny in question didn't make those commetns - my post was in reposnse to an attitude I hadn't come across before.

I hope people are right and NJ is an unusually bitchy board.

OP posts:
RahRahRachel · 26/03/2008 14:39

JamInMyWellies - I wonder how many of the people complaining about the nanny not being "paid to surf" are in fact surfing at work...

Kewcumber - I didn't post on that NJ thread and am not agreeing with the sentiment that half a days pay is meaningless to the employer, I was just saying that many nannies may see these big earnings coming in and not realise that it doesn't automatically mean lots of disposable income lying around later. Higher earners are likely to have bigger ingoings and bigger outgoings than lower earners.

Kewcumber · 26/03/2008 14:39

and no-one has chastised any nannies for going online here I thnk you are thinking of a differnt thread entirely.

Kewcumber · 26/03/2008 14:41

"I was just saying that many nannies may see these big earnings coming in and not realise that it doesn't automatically mean lots of disposable income lying around later" - I think thats what I have learnt rachel.

If I ever employ a nanny (god forbid) written in the contract will be "I have less disposable income income than you so don't take the piss, and buy your own biscuits".

OP posts:
BeauLocks · 26/03/2008 14:41

But it's none of your business what your employer earns.

RahRahRachel · 26/03/2008 14:41

I also must say that lots of nannies are treated very poorly, and most nanies have probably been burned at some point - so that's why there's a bit of an automatic "support the nanny not the employer stance" on NJ.

RahRahRachel · 26/03/2008 14:42

Buying my own biscuits would be a deal breaker for me I'm afraid Kew

Kewcumber · 26/03/2008 14:43

yes I can see that Rachel, I was just shocked.

OP posts:
Kewcumber · 26/03/2008 14:43

we wouldn;t suit then Rachel because I won;t have them in the house. (On the grounds that if I do, I bloody eat them)

AtheneNoctua · 26/03/2008 14:44

There are also plenty of employers who have been wrnged by negligent nannies. Let's not play the poor pitiful nanny card.

Kewcumber · 26/03/2008 14:46

my friend employed Ruby waxes nanny just after she'd shopped her affair to the press (unwittingly). She had the tabloids camped on her doorstep for weeks as the silly girl had given someone her address

I think I'll stick with a childminder for now...

I had so much to do this afternoon and MN has sucked up all my time Damn the internet!

RahRahRachel · 26/03/2008 14:50

And they post about it on here Athene, so it works both ways! I wasn't playing any card.

JamInMyWellies · 26/03/2008 14:52

I think its fair to say that there are crap nannies and crap employers also good nannies and employers. Just the way of the world. You are never going to stop nannies gossiping about employers. But I bet everyone on here as gossiped about their employers and queried how much they earn in relation. It is just sad that it has all been done in an open forum.

Blueskythinker · 26/03/2008 15:02

I for one don't surf the net at all when I am in work. Nor do I get paid for my lunch hour.

Now, I really have things to do - I am emotionally exhausted by today's events.

mumnanny1 · 26/03/2008 16:09

I agree with Rachel. I've read loads of very uncomplimentary threads about nannies on here, but it doesn't mean all employers are busy slagging off their nannies - at least I hope it doesn't. Your always going to read the worst stories. They're much more entertaining anyway.

Kewcumber · 26/03/2008 16:14

hmm thats true - I dont normally bother reading the nanny threads (not having one obviously) and certainly wouldnt have bothered reading NJ.

I do read the Cm threads sometimes and they generally seem to be fairly mature discussions. Maybe nannies are just younger than Cm's on the whole.

Or maybe I'm just a nice sheltered person (no commetns please tutter or Athenian bird) who's a bit startled at the possibility that a nanny might see me as some kind of rich bitch!

OP posts:
WanderingTrolley · 26/03/2008 16:17

Good point about nannies being younger I think.

chelsygirl · 26/03/2008 16:18

can we have a link to this thread please? speaking as an ex nanny, interested in what they have been saying

mumnanny1 · 26/03/2008 16:31

It's normally pretty obvious if someone is loaded or not.I've never cared as long as I've been treated well. The only time I've ever complained is when employers have 'forgotten' to pay me when I know that money isn't an issue for them.

Kewcumber · 26/03/2008 16:36

my cm is paid by standing order - I couldn;t run the risk I'd forget (which would be just like me!) I'd be mortified.

now that you say that mumnanny1 - it has dawned on me that any nanny living with me would spot shortage of funds pretty quickly from the lack of Sky, value pack food, lack opf social life etc

In fact maybe they would take pity and start offering to lend me money.
