Supporting three year old at nursery

Hi - my just-over-3 year old is due to start nursery in a few weeks. Up until now he's been to a childminder 2 days a week and with family (adults only) for the other three. He's a lovely, kind, gentle little soul but isn't great around other kids. Whenever we do anything that involves other children, he's very keen to hold my hand, ignore them and play with me. I don't know if this is just who he is (both me and DP are better in small groups), a result of lockdown, a result of being mainly brought up with adults so far (only child to older parents) or a combination of all.
Any hints and tips for how I can best support him through this transition? And if he does find a wee friend, any tips on supporting him with play-dates etc outside of nursery?
thank you so much xxx
