Hi! Just wondering, how many hours child care do you pay for? And how much is it?

I have a two year old, and one on the way. Was paying a family member to take care of the first, but the relationship has broken down.
I don’t want to be a sahm, but reduced hours to work part time after the first. Just wondering if it’s worth returning back part time or full time after the second.

10hours Afterschool service childcare for two dc- we pay €52 per week. So €5.20 an hour, after government subsidies. They are 7 and 9. We’re in Ireland.

At a private day nursery.

3 full days per week (7.30 - 6.00) @ £66 per day.

After 20% tax free childcare allowance that's.
£686 per month / £8236 pa

Thankfully grandparents have DC the other 2 days otherwise it would be 3/4 of my whole full time salary gone!!

Sorry that's just for 1 child if not clear.

Nursery or childminder in our area is approx £55 per day. Worth noting most have wait lists so getting one can be an issue

MGK · 13/02/2023 22:18

My childminder is £40 per day.

I send my two year old Monday-Thursday 8-5 but as a student I get 85% of it paid so I actually pay £24 a week - not sure if that’s the same on UC and if they could offer that help?

PurplePansy05 · 13/02/2023 22:21

Nursery in my area is around £70-ish per day (full day) and around £40 for half a day. London prices will be very different. Where in the UK are you, OP?

PurplePansy05 · 13/02/2023 22:23

Yes re wait lists, it's at least 6 months for ok nurseries in my area and a year for those considered really nice/doing wrap around for primary schools that are desirable.

CucumberCool · 13/02/2023 22:24

My childcare has just gone up to around £80 a day (for under 3yo) 🫣

Noeyeclare · 13/02/2023 22:33

£48 per day for private nursery - west of Scotland

mishmased · 13/02/2023 23:05

20 month old 25 hrs/week over 3 days €520 (€130/week). Our 7 and 10 year old do homework club for an hour after school twice a week and that cost €2 per child. I remember the days of 2k childcare.

All depends where you live ...most people can claim tax free childcare that saves 20%, universal credit saves up to 85%, 3 year olds get 15 or 30 hours the term after they turn 3....you can get UC or tax free on anything you pay with free childcare.
