Gaviscon Infant for Reflux

Hello Parents - Our 3 week old son has terrible reflux and awful trapped wind. The infacol did not help so the GP has prescribed Gavisicon Infant Sachets.

On the instructions it says for Bottle feed: "Mix each sachet into 115ml of bottle feed. Shake well and feed the infant as normal. Once the feed is over, use a spoon or bottle to administer Gaviscon Infant". I am really confused by this. Do I mix the gaviscon in with the formula when making up the bottle or afterwards once the bottle is made? Also do I need to give more once the feed is over? Sorry but I'm totally confused by the instructions and the GP didnt know said to follow the instructions on the box.

Would appreciate some advice from somebody that has used it and would also be keen to know if it helps with the reflux. The GP have warned it may constipate the baby which I'm worried could make the trapped wind even worse.

Many thanks for reading my message and for your help.

I mixed the sachet into the bottle when my daughter was prescribed it. I think I used a sachet per feed (again though, check the box).

I hope it works for your son but in my experience, it really didn't help, caused horrendous constipation, which in turn, made the reflux worse .

In the end. I used to buy Cow and Gate carobel (from Amazon or some supermarket pharmacies do it) to thicken in my daughter's milk but I'm afraid the reflux only stopped at around 10 months when she was stood up most of the time.

The problem is if the baby doesn’t drink whole bottle so doesn’t get whole dose

im a maternity nurse and tbh often find gaviscon doesn’t work for bad reflux and often constipates baby

omeprazole is good tho needs to be prescribed and on weight of baby

but for the moment put in small amount of milk so whole dose is drunk

then give remainder of milk

when we had it I was told you mix it into the milk if you’re bottle feeding, or with warm water and feed with a spoon if you’re breastfeeding.

My son had reflux and unfortunately nothing but time fixed it (lots of time - he’s 2 and a half and still gets quite hiccupy and has been known to spit up if he drinks too much water at once)

Plus better to swirl to mix then shake as that causes bubbles in the formula which doesn’t help reflux

We made the bottle and then sprinkled the gaviscon in and gave the bottle a shake.

Our DD's reflux was def developmental - she grew out of it at exactly 7months. But the full dose of gaviscon did give her constipation. We experimented with the doses and found that a half dose was enough to calm the reflux without causing constipation. So worth trying that if it has similar effect on your little one.

I breastfed. We mixed the Gaviscon with water and fed it in a bottle. It helped to an extent, though didn't get rid of the reflux entirely.

It didn't give the baby constipation.
