Hi I’m thinking about becoming a childminder and was wondering if anyone knows the exact qualifications you need to start up here? Do I need to attend a childminding course by Birmingham City Council? Do I need full dsl training or is a online safeguarding course enough, I previously did dsl so could I just do a refresher course? I have first aid And my other qualifications as a nursery nurse previously. Any advice would be helpful. x

I think the best thing for you to do would be to get in touch with your local authority and see how you go about registering in your area. They will probably put on a course which you need to attend and would be able to support and guide you through the process of becoming a childminder. I don’t know the exact qualifications you would need, but You would need a level 1 safeguarding course, a 12 hour paediatric first aid course and a dbs. Any other child related qualifications will be useful when you are looking for children, parents like to know they are leaving their child with someone who knows what they are doing, so the more you can show them, the better.
