Hi.

Am failing miserably in finding a new aupair so have cast the net wider and have had messages from girls in S. Africa and Brazil - would you take on someone from that far away? And if so what's the deal with visas, health are etc?

Thanks

You generally can't. We do not have au pair visas in the UK and you could be jailed for up to 5 years (plus an unlimited fine)if you were to take someone on who is not entitled to work in the UK.

Your options are:
1.EU

  1. Countries that qualify for Tier 5 Youth Visas: Australia/NZ, Australia plus a few others that people don't really au pair from (such as Taiwan).
  2. People who can get EU passports from parents being EU citizens - which sometimes South African/Brazilian people can.
  3. An ancestry Visa, which is available for people from commonwealth countries, who had a grandparent who was born in the UK.

If you're struggling, my suggestions are:

Keep your profile open to all countries (you'll get lots of applicants, but you won't be able to take them, but you'll look more popular).
Accept a shorter stay than you would normally. All our au pairs have been happy and stayed longer than initially said they would.
Up the pocket money.

Lots of Brazilians have ancestry visas. My au pair is Brazilian and has an Italian passport as do many of her friends. I would at least start discussions with non EU au pairs and ask them as one of the first questions if they have an EU passport. A lot may not think to put this in their profile if they do have one.

Well done!!

Roses - Brazilians cannot get ancestry visas / it’s for commonwealth citizens only.
