I have just started to work on a casual basis for a faily local family taking care of a newborn when mum does the odd hour of work or when she needs to do something that's hard with a newborn baby.
I am loving being back at work and wondered if other mums out there would like this kind of help.
I am a NNEB nanny and have been taking care of children for over 25 years ,including three of my own(two at college, youngest at high school)
What do mumsnetters think? is there a call for this kind of work ,or is it mainly undertaken by agencies. I live in luton and can be very flexible, have my own car and willing to travel (within reason)i can travel to London if its for a odd day work too .

I would have thought there would be quite a demand! Especially in terms of emergency cover. Shame you're not south of London... Can I suggest you post in the nanny share section too and include your location in the thread title.

lulumama · 05/09/2007 16:44

i wish you lived 200 miles closer, i often need childcare at short notice, and only for a few hours.......

miobombino · 05/09/2007 16:45

I would use that sort of service every month or 6 weeks if it was someone local to me with good references.

I'm a sahm of 4; my 3yo is at nursery for half days only. Very occasionally I'm hard pressed to be in several places at once - eg. concerts or parents' meetings at the older children's schools. It isn't always appropriate to bring the little one, but I have no choice really. It would be nice to leave him for a few hours with a trusted adult instead, where he could just potter about at home playing with his trainset and eating his tea.

But I don't need help above and beyond that sort of level. Is that what you mean ?

45nanny · 05/09/2007 17:08

Thanks for replying, yes miobombino, that is the kind of work i'm looking for.A bit like a babysitter but some one with good qualification and experienced should mum need it.
My present family doesnt have any family locally ,so i'm sort of playing the role of granny if she lived nearby.
Thanks for the advice mumpbump, will put something on there.

that is EXACTLY what I will need in a couple of months. Luton a bit far though.

JennaJ · 05/09/2007 17:13

This is what I do in West London. I get lots of work..varying just from an hour or so to weeks of work. I do overnights, evenings and weekends aswell. Its brilliant as you don't ever get bored of your job..its always new and exciting :-) The hardest part is how to get parents to find you!!

Go for it.

Jenna

flowerybeanbag · 05/09/2007 17:14

45nanny · 05/09/2007 17:30

JennaJ I am in West London and due with first baby in about a month's time. I have no family nearby and would be very interested in your service. What are your contact details?

Cheers

Kate

JennaJ · 06/09/2007 12:30

Kate- Hi, congrats on your bump :-) Im in Ealing, but work all over west and central London. You can seem more about me and my contact details on www.nannyneeded.co.uk Feel free to email me on [email protected] too. Hope to hear from you :-)

45nanny- Its quite hard getting known. Im based in Ealing, West london but I work all over west and central london. I have a website to advertise my evening and overnight babysitting service www.nannyneeded.co.uk , I post regularly on gumtree, nannyjob, findababysitter etc and from these ads I point people to the website.
For daytime babysitting I advertise locally. At playgroups, schools, families online, netmums etc
I have a nice regular set of people who use my services and I also get alot of one off bookings. Quite a few of my one offs come from local agencies who have my details and from friends of people I have babysat. I charge slightly under what most of the local nannies charge..and I go out of my way to be the perfect nanny. If the children love you and the parents are happy they are sure to recommend you and use you again! Im also VERY flexible about hours I work too.
It really is the perfect job..money wise its not great but it means I can stay home and look after my 2 small children and still be bringing in a wage. Its so good that I have such a big extended family now..I must have looked after a few hundred children around here over the past 6yrs. Everytime I go somewhere I bump into someone who I have babysat for..some of the babies are now 6. Its really funny.

hth Jenna

piggysgal · 06/09/2007 14:16

Thanks for that Jenna! I had been wondering what I would do on those occasions when I would need someone to look after the baby, and now I know!

45nanny · 06/09/2007 17:04

Hi Flowerybeanbag, i know huntington a little , where abouts are you .I would be willing to travel for a days work, but a few hours you are a little to far. I have friends and family in your area,so i know it would take me about an hourto get to you .

Jenna, you have a good thing going ,i have tried to do this sort of work before ,but didnt have much luck , i think i need re think where i put my ads and to work a little harder at promoting myself.
Regards jules

Hi 45. It's only ever likely to be a few hours at a time really, not any whole days so not really viable, which is a shame.
thanks anyway! And if you find a good way of publicising yourself which I could look at for one a bit more local to me that would be great!

girrafey · 07/09/2007 08:51
