im allowed 6 under 5 with my approved assistant of a couple of years, of which only one can be under 1. do you think ofsted would let me have a variation for 2 under ones until xmas?

I would definately approach them. They will want to know how you will cope, eg have you got enough highchairs, sleeping facilites etc.
Give them a list of all dates affected and what you will do. As much info as poss I've found.
If you are on good terms with your inspector give the a phonecall first to sound them out.
