Considering a nanny or au pair advice needed

I’m pregnant with my second child. My first is school age and will be 11 by the time I need a nanny or an au pair. Obviously the second will (hopefully) be fairly new born.

I’m considering if an au pair or nanny would suit us better. We have a decent size house with a couple of spare bed rooms and the baby will only need care for 2ish days a week and some evenings. Looking at the internet I’m confused as to which would be the better option to look at. Can anyone give me a run down and guidance please?

You will need a nanny to care for a young baby - au pairs are basically foreign students who will do babysitting and housework. They have no childcare training so will be fine to collect an 11 year old from school and make them tea, but not do a full day of care for a young baby.

Agreed - you need a nanny. An au pair is an extra pair of hands around the house and cannot look after a new baby for any length of time.

I thought that may be the case thank you.

If you are after someone to live in an aupair could still be an option and alot cheaper than a nanny.
I have had aupair friends in the past who have taken a year put from studies in nursing, teaching, childcare and becoming a Dr. If you find a reputable site, you may be able to find someone total qualified if not more so than a nanny.
However these people will only stay for a max of a year which could be a lot of upheaval for every one and Indo understand they are very rare :)
Just something nto think about x
