Found an au pair (yippee). Just sorting out the contract and realised I don't know if I'm supposed to be paying for her flights to us or not? Hasn't been discussed and now not sure!

I never have with any of mine. I know some people do but I didn't and none of them seemed to expect it. HTH

No, that's not usual (and you run the risk that they might turn up and then leave with you having paid for flights).

The agency we used some years ago advised against it, on the basis that previously people had used the tickets then vanished . They suggested that if you want to repay flights you do so after a period of time, if you're happy.

No absolutely not, it is not expected and leaves you open to paying the fare for someone who doesn't turn up/leaves after a short time/doesn't work out.
