Child not recognised

Not sure what we're doing wrong, but we've just tried to apply for our 30 free hours (starting from September) and we just received a message to say our child is not recognised. Not sure why/how as he really does exist! Could it be because we never applied for child benefit? Is there anyone who has any advice? Will ring them tomorrow, just to see what's going on, but thought someone might have had the same message.

If you've not applied for chb your child will not have a child reference number in the computer systems if government. This chb is going to interesting in 14 years time when many children don't receive their national insurance numbers..

Thought it might be something like that, thank you. Is there a way to get it? I'd obviously like to get the 30 free hours.

Sorry but you'll need to ring whatever helpline number there is and you may end up applying for chb. It's a problem that's only going to grow with the new rules.

We'll probably miss the deadline then. Wish I had known! Thanks for your help.

The deadline for the next term is 31st August so plenty of time to get sorted.
